I'm lovin' my new bike!

E-mail Print PDF

August 7th I picked up a very clean 1997 Suzuki DR 650. So far I'm enjoying every ride. The are a few changes I'm going to be making to it, but overall it's exactly the bike I was looking for. I can't wait to start farkling it.

Ready for the road!!!

I finally finished some of the mods I had been working on on the 550. Most notable is the fuse box and headlight cut relay that kills the headlight during start up. The new setup added 3 fuse slots, upgraded to blade type (ATC/ATO) fuses, and allowed me to properly power my heated grips, and accessory power socket. In the conversion I also used slightly larger wire for better conductivity. You can compare the two systems below.

Old fuse boxes (accessory fuse [top, open] & main [bottom, white label])

New fuse box (left) and start-up headlight cut relay (right)

When I tested everything, I also checked how well the ZX10 regulator is working. Seems to be just fine and happy in my little 550. I have yet to test ride it, but with the new tires, and rebuilt forks/new fork seals, I think I'll have a nice reliable bike again for this riding season.

Almost ready for the road!!!

Well, I finally got the lines and oil cooler installed over the weekend, and tonight I did a low RPM test for leaks. So far, so good. I also put on the new (to me) fender that I ordered last week. It's not perfect, but looks much better than that old patched up black one I had on there. Finally, I cleaned up some messy wiring from the grip heater installation last fall. I'm quite pleased with what I've accomplished so far.

In the works:

  • New fuse block, headlight relay mod, coil relay mod update, heated grip relay
  • accessories panel to hold switches, indicators, etc.

Line bending FAIL!

E-mail Print PDF

So I've been trying to get my oil cooler installed on the bike for a few days now. I had a nice little plan ready that would keep the lines hidden for the most part. As it turns out my plan failed because of room issues. Needless to say, the brake line I was bending up for the project was wasted, and I now need to buy new line and start over. No big deal since I'm buying aluminum line, which I'd rather use anyway. The worst part is the riding time I lost because of waiting for parts and fabbing things up. Live & learn, I guess.
